Now the answer that will actually help your channel: there is no universal best time to publish on YouTube. YouTube says publish time is not known to affect a video's long-term performance. Publishing while your audience is active can help initial viewership, but the system can continue finding viewers hours, days, months, or years later. Timing matters much more for a live stream, Premiere, breaking story, or community-led launch than it does for an evergreen tutorial.
Both statements can be true. A good release window can improve the opening of a video without determining its lifetime. Buffer analyzed the median engagement of 1.8 million long-form videos and Shorts across every hour and day of the week. It normalized its recommendations so the times are intended to be read in local time rather than converted from one fixed global zone.
For long-form, Sunday at 10:00 a.m. was the strongest individual slot, followed by Sunday at 9:00 a.m. and Friday at noon. Sunday was the strongest day overall, followed by Tuesday and Monday. Long-form results leaned heavily toward morning publishing, generally around 8:00–11:00 a.m.
For Shorts, the pattern was almost the reverse. Friday at 4:00 p.m., 6:00 p.m., and 7:00 p.m. occupied the top three slots. Shorts tended to perform best in evening windows, and Friday, Saturday, and Thursday were the strongest days in that order.
A striking limitation is visible inside Buffer's own history: its previous analysis favored weekday afternoons, whereas the 2026 dataset favors weekend mornings for long-form. Audience behavior, samples, and platform distribution change. A benchmark can be a sensible first experiment without becoming a permanent law.
Buffer's day-by-day starting times

vidIQ's 40.2 million-upload study
vidIQ analyzed 40.2 million U.S. long-form uploads and evaluated 30-day view performance relative to each channel's own average day. That within-channel comparison is valuable because a giant channel cannot dominate the result simply by contributing more views than a small one.
Its strongest day was also Sunday, at roughly 3.5% above a channel's average day. Saturday followed at roughly 2.2% above average, while Wednesday was the weakest at roughly 2.2% below average. The practical size of that day effect is worth noticing: it is measured in a few percent, not a tenfold difference.
More importantly, vidIQ reports that the gap between the best and worst publish hours had narrowed to within a few percent by day 30. Early differences existed, but largely equalized. That finding aligns with YouTube's official position better than dramatic best-hour headlines do.
vidIQ's sample is U.S. long-form content. It should not be generalized blindly to a Hindi-language channel in India, a Korean gaming audience, a global music channel, or Shorts. Geography, format, niche, and viewer routine all change the useful window.
Why reputable-looking studies disagree
A table of millions of videos feels definitive until you ask what was actually measured. One study may compare engagement rate, another 30-day views, and another first-day views. One may convert every upload into audience-local time, while another holds everything in Eastern Time. One may contain mostly U.S. long-form creators, while another mixes regions and formats.
Video age is another major trap. A video published six months ago has had far longer to collect views than one published last week. Channel size, niche, season, holidays, upload frequency, and subject quality can all correlate with publishing day. Unless a study controls for those variables, the clock may receive credit for differences created by the content or the sample.
There is also selection bias. Creators may reserve their strongest videos for a familiar release day. If Sunday videos perform better, Sunday itself may help—or creators may choose Sunday for their tent-pole uploads. Observational data can show an association. It cannot automatically prove that moving the same video to Sunday caused the improvement.

The wording matters: this is not a chart of when people watched only your channel. It shows when people who watch your content were active anywhere on YouTube. That makes it a map of audience availability, not a direct promise that they will choose your new upload.
The report rolls over a 28-day window, so revisit it. School terms, holidays, daylight-saving changes, sports seasons, and a sudden shift in audience geography can move the pattern. A screenshot from six months ago should not control today's schedule.
How to read the purple heatmap correctly
Look for blocks, not one magic square. If Friday from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. is consistently dark, that is a stable window. One slightly darker block surrounded by pale hours is more likely to be noise or a temporary routine than a command to publish at exactly 7:00 p.m.
Compare at least two candidate windows: one around your darkest recurring block and one contrasting slot. You need variation to learn. If you always publish Friday at 7:00 p.m., Analytics can tell you how Friday releases perform, but it cannot tell you what the same kind of video would have done Sunday morning.
Finally, separate your goals. If you want live chat participation, schedule at the center of the darkest block because viewers must be present simultaneously. For a normal upload, publishing shortly before an active window is a reasonable test, but YouTube does not publish an official requirement to release one, two, or four hours early.
Should you publish before the audience peak?
Many third-party guides recommend publishing one to four hours before the darkest heatmap block. The strongest defensible reason is operational: the finished video is public and available as viewers begin arriving, rather than becoming ready after the window has passed. Be careful with the popular explanation that YouTube always needs several public hours to index or test a video before it can recommend it. Use lead time as a variable, not a superstition. Try publishing 60–90 minutes before the main block for several comparable long-form videos, then try the start of the block. If one approach repeatedly wins on early qualified views without hurting later performance, keep it.
Long-form videos need a different schedule from Shorts
Long-form viewing is usually a deliberate commitment. A viewer needs enough time and attention for a tutorial, documentary, review, podcast, or essay. That helps explain why weekend mornings can work: viewers have more discretionary time, and a video can collect views across the rest of the day.
Shorts are consumed through a continuous feed in much smaller units. A Short may be tested and resurfaced well after publication, and the viewer does not need to reserve a 20-minute session. What new channels should do without enough Analytics data
A new channel may not have enough viewer data for YouTube to show a useful heatmap. That is normal. Do not interpret missing data as a reason to delay publishing. Start with a broad benchmark, hold it steady for a few uploads, and collect your own evidence.

How channel size changes the value of timing
Small channels usually have fewer returning viewers waiting for a release, so a precise minute can matter less than creators fear. Their bigger problem is earning the first qualified impression at all. Topic selection, searchable specificity, and packaging deserve far more attention than whether the publish button is pressed at 9:00 or 9:30.
Established channels can have stronger rituals. A regular audience may know that an episode arrives every Sunday, and notification or subscription traffic can create a visible launch. For those channels, changing the schedule has a human cost: it breaks an expectation even if the recommendation system itself does not penalize the new hour.
Large global channels face the opposite problem: there may be no hour when everyone is awake.
